Why Brush & Bow?

Brush & Bow

Brush – Founder

Gia Shim

Bow – Founder

Jiseon Annie Kim

Brush & Bow: A New Space for Art, Culture, and Connection

Brush & Bow is pleased to announce the soft opening of its new artist-led gallery and cultural space in New York City’s East Village.

Founded by visual artist Gia Shim (also known as rebob) and violinist Jiseon Kim, Brush & Bow brings together visual art, music, and cultural experiences in a welcoming space inspired by the Korean tradition of sarangbang—a place where people gather to share stories, ideas, and meaningful connections.

At the heart of Brush & Bow is a simple belief: art creates connections, and connections create new beginnings.

The name Brush & Bow reflects the creative backgrounds of its founders, bringing together the visual and performing arts. Rooted in Korean cultural heritage while embracing the diverse creative energy of New York, the space aims to foster meaningful exchanges between Korean artists, local artists, and the wider public.

The gallery’s identity is inspired by the traditional Korean door knocker, a symbol of welcome and invitation. Just as a knock on the door once announced the arrival of a guest, Brush & Bow invites visitors to step inside, discover new perspectives, and become part of an evolving creative community.

The space is divided into two complementary areas. Brush & Bow Gallery, located on the ground floor, presents original artworks and thoughtfully curated exhibitions, with an emphasis on making art approachable and accessible to a broader audience.

Downstairs, The Sarangbang serves as an intimate gathering place for hands-on workshops, music, cultural programs, and creative conversations. Together, the two spaces encourage visitors not only to experience art, but also to participate in its creation.

Inaugural Exhibition — Connected to Begin

The inaugural group exhibition, Connected to Begin, brings together artists working across different media, backgrounds, and creative practices.

Reflecting the spirit of Brush & Bow itself, the exhibition explores how individual creative journeys can intersect, opening possibilities for collaboration, dialogue, and new beginnings.

As an emerging artist-led initiative, Brush & Bow hopes to grow organically through the artists, neighbors, and communities who become part of its story.

More than a gallery, Brush & Bow aspires to be an open door—a place where art is shared, cultures meet, and something new begins.
